Steel gauge is the number that decides everything else
Tool chest gauge runs backwards — a lower number is thicker steel. Most consumer boxes are 22 or 20 gauge; serious boxes are 19 or 18. The difference shows up as drawer fronts that stay square under load, a carcass that does not rack when you roll it over a threshold, and a top that does not dish when you lean on it. If a listing does not state the gauge, assume 22.

Drawer slides: the part that fails first
Friction slides are metal-on-metal, cheap, and grind once they collect grit. Ball-bearing slides are the only sensible choice above the entry level, and the spec to check is the per-drawer load rating — typically 45–75 kg on good boxes. Full-extension slides let the back of the drawer clear the front of the cabinet, which is the difference between finding a socket and excavating for it. Soft-close is a genuine nicety on a heavy drawer; it is also the first mechanism to wear out on cheap units.
Read the capacity claim carefully
Manufacturers quote total capacity, which is a sum of per-drawer ratings and tells you almost nothing about whether the deep bottom drawer will hold a full socket set. Ask two questions instead: what is the rating of the largest drawer, and what is the caster load rating? A chest rated at 500 kg total on casters rated for 300 kg is rated for 300 kg.
Casters, because a rolling chest that will not roll is a cabinet
Look for 125 mm (5 in) casters or larger if the floor is anything other than smooth sealed concrete — small casters stop dead at extension-cord thickness. You want at least two swivel casters with brakes, polyurethane rather than hard nylon if you care about the floor, and a caster load rating stated per wheel. Four swivels are easier in tight spaces; two fixed plus two swivel track straighter down a long bay.
Locks, liners and the top
Barrel locks are common and easy to defeat; tubular locks are meaningfully better. Look for a central locking bar that secures every drawer from one key rather than per-drawer locks. On the work surface, a stainless or hardwood top earns its cost if you actually work on it; a plastic top is a shelf. Drawer liners are not optional — non-slip foam stops the entire contents of a drawer relocating to the back every time you roll the chest.
Sizing by bay width
Rolling chests cluster around 26 in, 41 in, 52 in and 56 in widths. Measure the bay and the doorway it has to pass through, and remember the side handle adds 5–8 cm that never appears in the listed width. Buying one size up is the single most common piece of advice from people who have owned one for a decade.

What steel gauge should a tool chest be?
19 gauge is the sweet spot for a serious home workshop; 18 gauge is professional grade. 22 gauge is fine for hand tools only. Remember the scale runs backwards — lower numbers are thicker steel.
How much weight can a tool chest drawer hold?
Good ball-bearing slides are rated 45–75 kg per drawer. Treat the headline “total capacity” figure as marketing and check the per-drawer and per-caster ratings instead — the lowest of the three is your real limit.
Are soft-close drawers worth it?
On a heavy drawer, yes — they stop a loaded drawer slamming and the chest rocking. On a budget chest they are usually the first mechanism to fail, so treat them as a sign of quality elsewhere rather than a feature to chase on its own.
