Smart home kit fails for boring reasons: the wrong radio, cloud-only control, and buying twelve devices before automating one. Here is how to avoid all three.

Start with the radio, not the gadget
Almost every smart-home regret traces back to the same mistake: buying devices one at a time and discovering later that they do not speak to each other. Four wireless standards dominate, and the one your devices use determines what else you can add later.

If you are starting from zero today, Thread with Matter is the sensible bet, with Zigbee as a well-supported fallback for cheap sensors. If you already own a pile of Wi-Fi plugs, you do not need to throw them out — you just need to stop adding more.
Local control is the feature nobody advertises
Ask one question of any device before you buy it: does it still work when the internet is down? Cloud-only devices route a light switch press through a data centre on another continent. That means latency you can feel, an outage takes your lights with it, and a company folding can turn hardware you own into a paperweight. Devices that execute automations locally — through a hub or a Thread border router — keep working. This single distinction predicts satisfaction better than any spec on the box.
What you can install without an electrician
Renting, or not keen on touching mains wiring? A surprising amount of a smart home is plug-in:
- Smart plugs — lamps, fans, coffee machines, Christmas lights. Zero installation.
- Smart bulbs — best where the wall switch stays permanently on.
- Battery sensors — door, window, motion, temperature, leak. Adhesive mounted.
- Battery smart buttons — stick one next to the bed, trigger a whole scene.
- Retrofit blind motors — clip onto an existing roller blind chain.
Wired smart switches, in-wall dimmers and smart thermostats are where an electrician earns their fee — and in many regions, where regulation requires one.
The three-device starting set
The most common failure mode is buying twelve devices and automating none of them. Start with three that solve a real annoyance: a motion sensor plus a smart bulb for the hallway you fumble through at night, and a leak sensor under the washing machine. Live with them for a month. What you add fourth will be obvious, and it will be different from what you would have guessed.
Privacy questions worth asking before you buy
- Does the device work without an account, or is registration mandatory?
- Where is data processed, and is there a documented retention period?
- Does the camera or microphone have a hardware disconnect, not just a software toggle?
- Has the manufacturer published a firmware security policy and an end-of-support date?
Manufacturers who answer these clearly tend to be the ones still supporting the product in five years.
Common questions
Do I need a smart home hub?
If you are building on Zigbee or Z-Wave, yes. If you are building on Matter over Thread you need a Thread border router, which is often built into a speaker, TV streamer or newer smart display you may already own. Pure Wi-Fi devices need no hub but depend on the manufacturer's cloud.
Is Matter going to replace Zigbee and Z-Wave?
Not soon. Matter is an application layer that lets devices from different brands work together; Thread is the low-power radio it usually rides on. Zigbee and Z-Wave still have far larger device catalogues, and mature hubs bridge them into Matter. Treat Matter as the direction of travel rather than a reason to bin working hardware.
Will my automations still run if the internet goes down?
Only if they execute locally. A hub-based system or a Thread network with a local controller will keep running. Cloud-only Wi-Fi devices will not — which is why we weight local control heavily in this category.
